Project 1: Dynamic Composition

Project 1005

This design’s focal point is where the smear of black and white streaks intersects with the abstract visual of a mascara spoolie. The point falls on the intersection of the vertical 2/3 line and the horizontal 1/3 line (top right corner). The focal point is not FULLY executed correctly, but the eye still gravitates there not only by intersection of two objects, but also by force of direction with the white lines in the smear.

The design’s visual flow is set up coming from the left top half, along the stroke/smear, to the top of the spoolie, and down the layers of the spoolie. It activates the entire picture plane. Force of direction with the white lines, and the layering detail within the spoolie guide the eye.

The design successfully utilizes repetition and shape of line. The left (smear) has white lines all in the same shape and direction. The spoolie has the same shapes for each layer.

The design has a very confident use of the Pitt pens. Different stroke widths were used, and the steadiness is well executed. The shoulder was used with each stroke. B was used for the smear, and M and F were used for the spoolie.

Everything mentioned above was successful about this piece. My failures on this piece were execution of focal point, using the wrong lead for the paper, and lack of cleanliness. A stronger emphasis on focal point needed to be executed. The paper was damaged due to a hard lead used in common Bic mechanical pencils. A softer lead is needed. When applying the rubber cement, it was difficult to use without getting on my fingers and the right side of the paper. In an anxious attempt to clean it, I wiped it away while it was not dry. It smeared and faded the ink, and left marks.
