Project 3: Variation of Line

Project 3002

The primary focal point of this design is the intersection of the 3 lines I call “uncertain beams.” Which is found almost at the 1/3 vertical line and the 2/3 horizontal line.

The visual flow comes from the hair-like lines stemming from the right. I like to call those ethereal lines. It comes from that location, to the left, and the eye tries to understand the negative space I implemented with the intersection of one of the beams and the ethereal lines, then goes down to where the ribbon-like line (calm) just touches the beam at the bottom, then comes back up, and follows the ethereal lines to the left edge of the page.

The uncertain beams, are not as jagged enough to seem anxious, but has this vibrational sense of uncertainty, but still beams outward. These lines are the thickest. The calm ribbon line has varying thicknesses, going from thin to slightly thicker. The thinnest lines are the ethereal lines, comes from a cluster, spreading outward and to the left of the page from the right.

There aren’t many shapes created by the negative space. I wanted to imply that the ethereal lines were going OVER one beam, and under the other two but using very very fine negative space, implying the continuation of those lines. I also formed a circle with the ribbon, and a sharp dagger-like triangle with the 3 beams.

I was very successful with my craftsmanship, not having any smudges or pencil lines. I actually did not use any pencil with this piece. I went right into it with the pens. I was very excited to get it onto paper and very much enjoyed this assignment. My unsuccessful part of this assignment was not activating the bottom right of the picture plane and not having just a pinch more care with the placement of the focal point. It needs to be shifted a bit more to the left.
